Reading at Highcliffe

How do we value reading at Highcliffe School?

At Highcliffe School, we value the power of education to change lives. We also value the power of reading to contribute to that change.

How do we show that we value reading at our school?

Firstly, all subject teachers – not just those in English – make sure that they provide a range of challenging reading material for their students. Furthermore, the teachers will guide students through this material where appropriate.

Secondly, we know that the value of reading lies also in being able to explore a range of experiences beyond that of the curriculum. For this reason, we provide students with regular opportunities to engage in “reading for pleasure”. On these occasions, students can choose what they want to read or discuss a text their teacher has enjoyed.

Thirdly, we offer reading interventions for students in need of extra support.

In all these ways, we show that we value reading at Highcliffe School and recognised its importance to both progress and in building a well-rounded character. This means our students can leave school better prepared to participate in the world of work and as citizens of the wider world too.
