Music plays an important role in our community here at Highcliffe. As well as weekly music lessons there are many opportunities for music-making outside of the classroom. We run a morning Music Enrichment programme, with a range of ensembles and clubs available; individual instrumental tuition; and many performance opportunities throughout the year.
The Music Enrichment programme provides
opportunities for all students to get involved in music-making and is the
vehicle for delivering the wider music curriculum. All school ensembles will
perform in the end of term concerts and in a range of events throughout the
year both in school and out in the wider community. As part of the programme
students can also pursue additional qualifications in Music Theory and Music
Production.
Rehearsal Rooms are available to be booked for lunchtime sessions – see Mr Matcham.
Tuition takes place during the school day. Please see details of the arrangements and price list on the link below. We currently offer the following instruments, which are all available to pay for on Wisepay in the summer term for the next academic year. Please speak to the Finance Office if you wish to sign up at any other point during the year.

As well as a variety of performance opportunities the co-curricular programme also includes visiting practitioners, workshops and trips to concerts and to explore pathways into the music industry.

Excellence
Highcliffe School benefits from a strong and dynamic performing arts provision that fosters collaboration, creativity and individual expression whilst making a sizeable contribution to the school community and to student well-being. As part of this provision we have invested in a scholarship scheme for those that wish to specialise in the study of a musical instrument.
The Headteacher’s Scholarship for Music pays 60% towards the cost of weekly instrumental lessons for one year. The scheme seeks to encourage and support those wishing to continue their instrumental lessons into secondary school; eligible applicants will already be learning an instrument, typically in lessons provided by the primary school. The scholarship offer will be available for a limited number of students who are signing up to learn the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon or saxophone; cornet, trumpet, French horn, euphonium, trombone or tuba; violin, viola, cello or double bass at Highcliffe School.
Selection
Applicants will be invited to attend an audition/interview at Highcliffe School. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate their potential, commitment and enthusiasm by preparing a short piece of their choosing and answering questions about their involvement and interest in music. Auditions are carried out by the Headteacher alongside members of the Music Department.
Expectations
Scholarship students will need to maintain a minimum attendance of 90% at their weekly instrumental lesson throughout the year and at the weekly rehearsals of their scholarship ensemble. This will allow each student to experience regular performance opportunities in our school concerts and performances in the wider community. Scholarship students are also required to practice their instrument daily following targets set by their instrumental teacher. Under the guidance of the instrumental teacher, scholarship students will work towards a graded examination suited to their ability and when ready can take their examination in one of the windows available during the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.
Benefits
Each student on the scheme will gain valuable performance experience which will in turn build confidence and help boost attainment at GCSE and A Level. As part of the scholarship all students will have access to a range of opportunities working alongside professional working musicians, for example, taking part in master classes lead by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Achieving a successful pass for the graded examination and continuing to meet the expectations for the year as outlined previously will qualify a student to apply for the scholarship in subsequent years; each student has the potential to gain funding through to A Level.
How to apply
Applications are invited from Year 6 students joining Highcliffe School in September. Confirmation of places is sent around March, along with the admissions data collection form which includes a section for scholarship applications.
