Black History Month 2023 | Highcliffe School

Black History Month 2023

We are celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth at Highcliffe: this year’s theme is #SalutingOurSisters which pays homage to black women who had contributions ignored, ideas appropriated, and voices silenced.

What's happening at Highcliffe this Black History Month?

  • In assemblies and tutor time we will be exploring ideas around equality and equity, and why events like Black History Month are necessary.
  • In subject lessons, we will be focusing on the contribution and achievements of key Black British women, as well as with displays in the library and around school.
  • We are also holding a school-wide video essay competition, focused on the theme of #SalutingOurSisters, as well as promoting the national Black History Month Poetry Competition 2023: https://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk/black-history-month-poetry-competition-2023/ Both competitions are designed to honour the amazing achievements and contributions of black women in various fields – from literature, music, science, politics, and social care to campaigners, nurses, and everyday heroes who have made a difference to our lives.

“Why black women? …by highlighting the achievements and contributions of black women throughout history does not mean we are ignoring black men. …for centuries the voices of black women have been suppressed, silenced and sidelined. …my response to: Why black women? Is a simple one. Why not, black women?

 Despite the challenges, we persevere.

Despite the adversity, we not just survive but thrive.

Despite the negative outcomes thrown at us because of systemic racism, we rise up and make a mark in history.

In the words of Coco Gauff, US Open Champion 2023: “To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it.”

To all the black women – whoever you are, wherever you are, I salute you!

Join me as we honour black women’s achievements, amplify their voices, and challenge the systems that oppress them. #SalutingOurSisters #WeMatter”
