Bread: Year 6 Transition Project Work.
In the autumn term Year 6 from Highcliffe St. Mark Primary School have been working hard in our laboratories. They have been learning how to use science apparatus including Bunsen Burners and microscopes safely. They have extracted pure salt from rock salt, grown salt crystals, used a microscope to study them, measured the energy content of a variety of breads and looked at the effect salt has on yeast.
We have all had a fantastic time and hope that we will work with other primary school students in the spring term. Here are some quotes from our year 6 visitors from Highcliffe St. Mark:
‘I think we could go for lunch earlier so the science lesson can go on for longer’.
‘It was awesome and exciting. I loved it’
‘Thank you so much for teaching us such brilliant science in Highcliffe’.
‘Science has been great fun for me. I can’t wait to come up to Highcliffe next year’.
‘It was really good fun and I wish it could carry on’.
‘I had a great experience. I can’t wait to go up to the comp next year’.
‘Maybe we could have had more time. I had an amazing time experimenting with things’
‘Can’t wait until next year’.
‘I really, really like using the Bunsen burner’
‘I absolutely loved every day I went up there’
‘There’s only one word that can describe it – brilliant!’
‘I found all the lessons fabulous! Thank you’.
Visiting Southampton University
The Biology department took some Year 12 students to Southampton Hospital for a tour around the Histology Department and to the Biomedical Imaging Unit to observe various types of electron microscopes. Students visited different areas of the hospital and were able to see the ‘cut-up room’ where they observed a lung, placenta and brain dissection.
Here are some comments about the students’ experiences.
Katie Powell - ‘I really enjoyed the trip and found it was a very valuable experience which has allowed me to gain knowledge that a textbook wouldn’t. It was also a very fun day viewing the histology unit and has helped me greatly.’ Calum Wright - ‘It was a brilliant trip. It gave me a real insight into the medical side of Biology. It’s something a small amount of people get to experience. I’m so glad I took the opportunity.’
